Thermal-neutron capture cross sections and resonance integrals of the $$^{243}$$Am(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{rm 244g}$$Am and $$^{243}$$Am(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{rm 244m+g}$$Am reactions

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 58(3), p.259 - 277, 2021/03

Research and development were made for accuracy improvement of neutron capture cross section data on $$^{243}$$Am among minor actinides. First, the emission probabilities of decay $$gamma$$ rays were obtained with high accuracy, and the amount of the ground state of $$^{244}$$Am produced by reactor neutron irradiation of $$^{243}$$Am was examined by $$gamma$$-ray measurement. Next, the total amount of isomer and ground states was examined by $$alpha$$-ray measurement. Thermal-neutron capture cross sections and resonance integrals were derived both for the $$^{243}$$Am(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{rm 244g}$$Am and for $$^{243}$$Am(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{rm 244m+g}$$Am reactions.

The kinematics of multi-nucleon transfer reactions in the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm collisions were investigated using a stacked-foil technique and radiochemical separations. In previous studies, isotopic distributions of the products of below-target isotopes were found to be broader than those of above-target isotopes, which had been interpreted as larger contributions of strongly dumped collisions in the productions of below-target isotopes than above-target ones. However, in the present study, the average total kinetic energy loss (TKEL), and thus, the average excitation energies were determined for both below-target and above-target isotopes, and they were found to be similar. This contradicts the previous interpretation, and thus, a new interpretation has been proposed; highly excited above-target products are lost by fission.

In the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, the concept of the transmutation of minor actinides (MA: Np, Am and Cm) with accelerator-driven systems is being studied. The MA nitride fuel has been chosen as a candidate because of the possible mutual solubility among the actinide mononitrides and excellent thermal properties besides supporting hard neutron spectrum. MA nitrides of AmN, (Am,Y)N, (Am,Zr)N and (Cm0.4Pu0.6)N were prepared from the oxides by the carbothermic reduction method. The prepared MA nitrides were examined by X-ray diffraction and the contents of impurities of oxygen and carbon were measured. The fabrication conditions for MA nitrides were improved so as to reduce the impurity contents. For an irradiation test of U-free nitride fuels, pellets of (Pu,Zr)N and PuN+TiN were prepared and a He-bonded fuel pin was fabricated. The irradiation test started in May 2002 and will go on for two years in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor.

Critical and subcritical mass calculations of curium-243 to -247 based on JENDL-3.2 for revision of ANSI/ANS-8.15

Critical and subcritical masses were calculated for a sphere of five curium isotopes from 243Cm to 247Cm, in metal and in metal-water mixtures, considering three reflector conditions: bare, with a water reflector or a stainless steel reflector. The calculation were made mainly with a combination of a continuous energy Monte Carlo neutron transport calculation code, MCNP, and the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-3.2. Other evaluated nuclear data files, ENDF/B-VI and JEF-2.2, were also applied to find differences in calculation results of the neutron multiplication factor originated from different nuclear data files. A large dependence on the evaluated nuclear data files was found in the calculation results.

Neutron-deficient americium and curium isotopes with half-lives $$leq$$10 min have been produced with the tandem accelerator, and their EC and weak $$alpha$$ decays have been successfully measured through an on-line isotope separation. Decay schemes of $$^{235,236}$$Am have been established, and proton-neutron configurations in the parent and daughter nuclei have been determined. Observed $$alpha$$ transitions in $$^{233,235}$$Am were found to be the favored transitions between the $$pi 5/2^{-}[523]$$ Nilsson states. Information on nuclear structure, deformation, and atomic masses in this region were obtained.
